Well, I can no longer legally drive, at least not for another six months. Such a reality in Texas may be difficult to comprehend but don't feel pity for me. Primarily because I deserve it, and secondarily because its been fun. At least as much fun as waking up at 6 am to run towards buses and trains, and returning home 16 hours later to a cat that will wake you up in just enough time for dreams to start getting interesting so you can repeat the process, can possible be.
As horrendous as all this sounds, it pales in comparison to the magnificent forbearance of Melville. Today for example, the third mate of the Pequod ate enough at Ahab's table that it "did not so much relieve his hunger, as keep it immortal in him." This is but one random sentence describing the captains dinner table, I can only wonder what the battle with the whale will be like. For that's what I get to look forward to on transit, chapters of Moby Dick, and it is excellent. Only surpassed by the twenty minutes I spent waiting for the bus in downtown Dallas.
The disappointment I had with the eta of my bus was immediately overturned by the performance at the Pearl Bar on Commerce. 17 strong bands have a tendency to make your Hefeweizen taste that much better. Who knew a drummer, a pianist, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and an oboe could sound that good. I had to leave far too early, but luckily I got to listen to a vato serenade the DART bus driver. "What's so wrong with taking the day off and riding around with your favorite driver?" Indeed.
So the next time you get up, turn the air conditioning on in your car, spare a thought for the life you're missing out on for the sake of "convenience". While you're stuck in Dallas traffic, I'll either be part of a desperate battle in the Pacific or listening to Big Band Jazz. At least until the state gives me the "privilege" to drive again.
